With a whole slew of events happening around America, Bike To Work Day (BTWD) is probably the most widely known. This year, thats happening on May 21st. Not only is the League of American Bicyclists extending that to a whole week (17-21 May).

The rest of the month Bike Pittsburgh has Car Free Fridays campaign. Who says you can’t ride every day?

Pennsylvania Walks and Bikes has a Summit planned “to promote State Legislation that supports safe pedestrian and bicycle use throughout the state.” on May 4th.

With that said, Velomuse is hosting another mileage contest, targeting new and everyday commuters. You will be able to upload your miles to this website every day, starting May 1st. The Pittsburgher who has the most commuting miles over the course of the month, will win a prize. We might even have an event to celebrate at the end of the month!

Being a dedicated fashionista, Gary Fisher has come up with the answer to all cyclists wondering what to wear for their bike ride: the automatic FashionBike Generator. It is a device that sits on your handlebar end and resembles a rearview mirror, while silently integrating data from your bicycle make and model, GPS, weather services, and local business profiles to determine the most appropriate attire for one to wear.

FashionBike Generator combines the practical with the fashionable, and even syncs up with a predetermined limit towards your credit card to help you make fashion-conscious purchases while you run errands so you don’t miss any sales. In the event that your FashionBike credit is declined at an inappropriate vendor, 2 members of the FashionBike police will arrive ready to escort you to the nearest art gallery and cafe for intellectual refueling.

It comes with 3 settings, “Casual”, “Dapper”, and “Bling” to accomodate different occassions.  It is not recommended to leave the setting at “Bling” for too long, as it strains the eyes.  The only down-side we’ve seen with this new product is that the engineers made this beta version solar-powered to reduce its environmental impact, but we’re hoping next year we will see a version that allows for nighttime fashionability?

Once the first user was observed mounting a bicycle equipped with the FashionBike Generator accessory, she stood and rejoiced, “This is the most fun I’ve had since I was a little girl. April Fools’ Day doesn’t happen often enough!!”
